Spikes Makes History

Bogalusa Daily News Bogalusa native Charlie Spikes became the 1st player in history on Sunday to hit a ball out of cavernous Municipal Stadium in Cleveland. Spikes aptly nicknamed The Bogulusa Bomber was acquired by The Indians in an offseason blockbuster deal with The Yankees. With Buddy Bell on base in the home half of the 6th inning Spikes connected off Yankee reliever Tom Buskey on 3-1 pitch sending it over the left center field fence and out of the park. A huge Bat Day Crowd of 55787 roared its approval. Spike's historic milestone overshadowed The Yanks 10-9 win. New York after taking a 9-2 lead in the 5th had to hang on for the victory. Ex Indian Sudden Sam Mcdowell fresh from the dl pitched a shaky 8th. Closer Fred Beene shut down the Tribe in the 9th to preserve the win for Lefty Fritz Peterson who struggled through 5 innings.
